What's better than a croque monsieur? A croque madame of course...

This week’s must-try dish comes from a Melbourne institution, so good it has spawned outposts in Paris and Barcelona.

Is that the full name?
Yeap, it’s just “croque madame” on the menu.

Where do you get it?
Hardware Société, at both 10 Katherine Pl & 123 Hardware St, Melbourne VIC 3000

Why is it a winner?

Sandwich excellent quality brioche with thick slices of bacon and cheese, cover in seeded mustard bechamel, fry till golden brown, crack an egg on top and you’re always going to end up with a winning dish. But when it comes from the team at Hardware Société who have been pumping out some of Melbourne’s most inventive, most delicious breakfast dishes for more than 13 years, you know it’s going to be next level. And it is!

Anything else to know?
Not for nothing did Di and Will Keser, the duo behind Hardware in Melbourne, Paris and Barcelona, write a book called No Eggs on Toast. Here you will find French and Mediterranean inspired dishes which are anything but boring. So good to see too that after closing the original Hardware St outlet last year, both cafes are open again. The long lines and Melbourne vibes are back too, which makes us think maybe life can go back to normal post-Covid…
