They’re not pretty or fancy, but the hot dogs at this Melbourne bakery are second-to-none.

If you haven’t tried the pastry-wrapped beef sausages at Brunswick’s A1 Bakery, you are missing out!

Is that the full name?

It’s just “hot dog” on the menu.

Where do you get it?

A1 Bakery, 643-645 Sydney Rd, Brunswick VIC 3056

Why is it a winner?

No Sydney Road expedition is complete without a quick pit stop at A1 Bakery for a just-out-of-the-oven hot dog. They aren’t exciting to look at, just a simple beef sausage wrapped in a pastry blanket with sesame seeds sprinkled on top, but the pastry is A1’s specialty and the hot dog is somehow the perfect snack. There are lots of the usual Middle Eastern bakery treats on offer here – from the Cheese and spinach triangles to Shanklish pies – but somehow it’s the hot dog – at the bargain basement price of $1.50 for the small and $3 for the large – that we keep coming back for. Again, again and again.

Anything else to know?

A1 Bakery should be on the itinerary of any serious food lover and cook in Melbourne. Not only does the bakery pump out excellent pita, pies and pastries, this is the place to stock up on Middle Eastern groceries like pomegranate molasses, dates and dips. It also doubles as a cafe and you can drop in for a classic Lebanese breakfast of eggs with sujuk, labne, cucumber, tomato, olives, mint and pita bread, as well as falafel and kafta platters.
