Sal's New York Pizza
cuisinesPizza, American

Sal’s aims to put the New York in New York pizza, which means everything is imported from the US, including hard spring wheat flour milled in New York, Wisconsin mozzarella, Californian tomatoes and even the recipe itself, which comes from legendary New York pizza maker Salvatore Leo. It means that when you grab a slice here it’s as Sal’s website claims “Australia’s only 100% authentic New York pizza”.

Dish Cult’s top pick: Famous New York pepperoni (large, $34)

90 Secondi
cuisinesPizza, Italian

From New York to Naples, you also loved the traditional Neapolitan pizza at 90 Secondi in Docklands. Cooked in just 90 seconds, as they do in Italy, expect a classic menu of wood fired pizza including the diavola, made with San Marzano tomato, fior di latte cheese, hot salami and topped with rocket, as well as more “gourmet” offerings such as the maialina which comes with hot salami, pork sausage, ham, fior di latte cheese and San Marzano tomato.

Dish Cult’s top pick: L’italia – San Marzano tomato, fior di latte cheese, aged prosciutto di Parma and rocket ($30.90)

Gradi at Crown
cuisinesPizza, Italian

Much lauded and awarded Gradi was also top of your list. It’s where restaurateur and chef Johnny Di Francesco, the Australian pizza master trained in Naples to exacting and traditional standards, plies his trade. You can’t go past Gradi for tradition and you can’t go past Johnny’s margherita – the pizza that won him the 2014 World Pizza Championships!

Dish Cult’s top pick: Ortolana – San Marzano tomato, fior di latte cheese, zucchini, capsicum, eggplant and onions ($32)

Motorino Pizzeria
cuisinesPizza, Italian

Everyone deserves a local pizza place like Motorino in South Kingsville, a tiny suburb in Melbourne’s inner west, but unfortunately not everyone has one! Here you’ll find pizza with traditional and not-so-traditional toppings. You told us you love the funghi pizza. It’s topped with field mushrooms, caramelised onion, ricotta, olive oil, thyme and mozzarella and it’s just delicious, as is the garlic and fresh herb pizza, which is like a better version of classic garlic bread.

Dish Cult’s top pick: Salsiccia – Tuscan sausage, tomato sugo, caramelised onion, mozzarella and rocket (large, $22)

La Scarpetta Pizza
cuisinesPizza, Italian

If you’re after classic Italo-Australian pizza La Scarpetta is the place. You told us it’s a favourite for its menu of old school hits, from classic capricciosa to much-less-classic-but-still-very-delicious Aussie pizza. This is a suburban pizzaria which will make you hungry for simpler times.

Dish Cult’s top pick: Meat lovers – tomato sauce base, ham, salami, mozzarella, bacon and pork sausage (large, $20.90)

DOC Pizza and Mozzarella Bar Carlton
cuisinesPizza, Italian

Dish Cult follower Jess told us you’ll get “authentic Italian pizza” at DOC, and we fully agree. The menu of traditional Italian pizza comes with the highest quality ingredients and the gluten free and vegan versions are also excellent. You can’t go past the pizza ai porcini which features wild mushrooms, truffle oil and mozzarella with grated DOP pecorino.

Dish Cult’s top pick: Pizza soppressa – San Marzano tomato, mozzarella, mild salami, provolone, pesto di casa and Ligurian olives ($27)

On your way to the beach? You told us to stop by at Pizza d’Asporto for a classic pizza first. Here you’ll find the best of Southern Italy on top of a pizza, from the Broccolini pizza with buffalo mozzarella, pecorino, broccolini and white truffle oil to the San Giorgio with its base of San Marzano tomato topped with sopressa salami, artichoke hearts, grilled peppers and olives. Once you’re at the beach, check out the Kiosk d’Asporto for snacks and pastries with the same Italian flair.

Dish Cult’s top pick: Patate – mozzarella, potato, taleggio, caramelised leek and rosemary ($22)

A big thank you to everyone who nominated and shared their favourite pizza places with us! We look forward to finding out where YOU think the best restaurants, cafes and eateries are in Melbourne and sharing that with the world.
