Day of the Dead is the perfect time to book one of these great Mexican restaurants.
Celebrate the Mexican holiday with tacos, tamales and tortillas, not to mention tequila, at one of our favourite Mexican restaurants.
Since opening above a 7-Eleven in 2010, Mamasita has become one of Melbourne’s best known Mexican restaurants, providing a fresh take on this Central American cuisine. If the queues are anything to go by, the popularity of Mamasita is unmistakable. But don’t let that put you off, once you’re inside, the in-house Mezcalier will provide you with a phenomenal range of agave spirits that make it well worth the wait. Offering gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options, there is something for everyone here.
When you’re there, make sure you check out the scallop tostaditas or the braised lamb birria tacos. Mamasita accepts walk-ins but booking is recommended, especially for larger groups. Takeaway is also available if you’d rather enjoy your tacos at home.
Dish Cult’s top pick: Lamb birria tacos – braised lamb, consome ($18)
If you don’t enjoy late-night Mexican food, craft beer and tequila we probably can’t be friends. This small and colourful taqueria offers a welcomed break from busy Brunswick Street. Little Hop doesn’t take bookings, so just walk in when you’re hungry and enjoy. The concise menu boasts mouth-watering meat and vegetarian tacos as well as snacks that are sure to leave you raving about them for days to come. And don’t panic if you’re vegan because they can accommodate this too.
Little Hop’s signature dish is the de pescado taco – a fish taco with battered fish, red cabbage, chipotle mayo, coriander and lemon. Diners come for the food and stay for the great vibes and service.
Dish Cult’s top pick: De pescado taco ($7)
If you like Mamasita, you’re sure to love its baby brother, Hotel Jesus. The market-inspired Mexican bar and diner offers reimagined classics and dishes you may not have heard of but definitely should try, like the volcan de carne – fried cheese on a tostada with adodo brisket, salsa verde, onion and coriander.
The 70’s inspired interior is a nod to the traditional taquerias and tostadurias of Mexico serving up irresistible street food like palm heart tostadas. And you can’t go to Hotel Jesus and not try one of their classic cocktails with a Mexican twist. Alcoholic Horchata: Yes, please!
Why not take it one step further and book in for a bottomless brunch with the gang for a tequila fuelled fiesta. Hotel Jesus has menus accommodating all dietary requirements, so if you’re vegetarian, vegan, gluten or dairy-free, you may have just found your new favourite dinner location. So the next time you find yourself craving some mouth-watering tacos or an awesome margarita (or two), make sure to check out Hotel Jesus.
