Where to find the best Indian food in Manchester

What makes Manchester special is not just its radical ingenuity, but its diversity. The city has a rich complex of cultures because it represents so many different people. Cultures have merged together in numerous ways to make Manchester a growing and cultural phenomenon. One aspect of this is the food. You can discover all sorts of different cuisines in Manchester, from Nepalese to Chinese and of course, classic British pub food. But what also tends to happen is you get a merging of cuisines. A restaurant we have talked about a couple of times before, MyLahore is an example of this. MyLahore is about showcasing how the owners’ lives were shaped by multiple cultures, shown through their menu. As cultures intertwine, we get different sorts of dishes and styles. That is why MyLahore has an Asian twist on shepherd’s pie and a British twist on their curries. They are showing what being British-Asian means for them. This is none the more apparent than in Indian cuisine within Manchester. All Indian restaurants stay true to their roots, but there are certain things that make them unique as an Indian eatery in Manchester. We have fabulous traditional restaurants, like Shere Kahn on the Curry Mile, but we also have places like the Bundobust Brewery, which takes in British drinking culture whilst being in a beautiful Grade II listed building. Here’s a little exploration of some of Manchester’s finest and unique Indian eateries.

This brew tap and restaurant is situated by the cartway on Oxford Road. The place, as you may have guessed, is a functioning brewery. They produce roughly 20,000 pints a month! That’s a lot of beer. The brewery sits within the over 100-year-old Grade II listed St James Building. There are other Bundobust restaurants near Piccadilly Gardens, in Leeds and also in Liverpool. But this is the only Bundobust brewery. Only established this year, this Indian brewery is new, innovative and exciting. From their Dhania pilsner, Peela pale ale and Thornbridge collaborations, it’s an innovative and creative business. Not only do they serve beer that is exclusive only to Bundobust, they serve gorgeous vegan and vegetarian gujarati street food too. Served in style through their uniform collaboration between Universal Works and HIP, their food, beer and business model is slick. This encapsulates why they are so praised by others in the independent food and drink scene.

Located near the Turn Moss Playing Fields in Chorlton, Roti serves arguably the best roti in town. Roti, in case you’re unsure, is a flat circular Indian bread often served with other dishes or with ingredients like paneer cheese. Linking to the introduction, this street food establishment is a blend between Indian and Scottish food, showing the diversity of Manchester and why when cultures intertwine, we get unique and memorable restaurants. From splendid cocktails to the Indian Roti Butty, the Panjabi Pepper and Chilli Squid and the Highlander Burger (pictured), you can see the magnificent mix of cuisines and cultures in their menus and within the building. Why not have a sweet panner roti with some Bhandi fries, served with their very own Roti IPA? We highly recommend trying this one-of-a-kind cuisine. There is another Roti in Sale, Trafford which is within Greater Manchester too.

Mughli’s restaurant is centred around their charcoal pit so they can cook the best tandoori charred meats and bread. A big player on the Curry Mile, Mughli is a family-run restaurant since 1991 that prides itself on serving the best tandoori food possible. From a mixed grill, scorpion lamb chops to malai broccoli, the grill offers many different options. Their twisted cocktails have the same level of quality too as their food does. There is no reason to question the quality of Mughli – the Guardian, the Telegraph and BBC Good Food all highly recommend them, and we do too! Now available to takeaway and offering student discounts, Mughli is a keen location for birthday parties, students and people who want a quiet night in.

Sanskruti is an Indian restaurant that takes pride in taking in flavours and dishes from all across India. Located in the Fallowfield/Ladybarn area, Sanskruti’s menu is an ode to their favourite dishes and local cuisines of India. From South Indian dosas to Mumbai chaats, so much depth and precision has gone into the creation of their menu. Boasting rice and daal dishes, plus plenty of bread options too from the roti and naan section. A completely vegan and vegetarian restaurant, this is the absolute perfect place for non-meat eaters. A restaurant with a lot of range and quality, it’s no wonder that the Guardian and the Sunday Times ranked Sanskruti Restaurant so highly. What’s more, they are now a fully licenced restaurant, so you can have a beer or two with your gorgeous food.
