Traditional pubs in London
What Londoner doesn’t love a good, traditional English pub? We know we certainly do! Whether you’re looking for the perfect pint or just some classic British fare, the venues in this handy guide feature all of your favourite pub classics.
The oldest riverside pub in London, the Prospect of Whitby is located in Wapping and boasts a serene and historic aesthetic. Grab the two for one pints offer or prosecco and palomas Monday to Friday, and enjoy a refreshing bevvy on the water or in the beer garden. Built in the 1520s, this venue screams history. It even served a few sailors and smugglers in its time. So if you’re feeling jaunty, pop on over to the Prospect of Whitby for the perfect match of cosy and exciting.
Just a couple of centuries younger (but still pretty old), this traditional joint is located in the heart of Richmond. Serving authentic British cuisine and real ales, The Cricketers checks the primary bases for those traditional pub faves, and it gives a bit of flair with its quaint and cosy floral aesthetic. Ideal for drinks on the terrace or simply having a pint and watching the game, this place gives us everything we’re looking for in a classic pub. And if you can round up about six of your mates, we definitely recommend booking a table. It’s a no-brainer that this place can get a bit packed.
Another one of our riverside faves, this 200-year-old nautical-themed paradise is located in Greenwich, just a short walk from Maze Hill and Cutty Sark stations. A self-proclaimed fish and chip favourite, The Cutty Sark has some seriously top-tier authentic British cuisine. And, of course, we can’t forget about the Sunday roast. With a private space along the river and tasty classics, this venue is perfect for larger parties and events. If you’re looking for the ultimate upscale yet laidback traditional pub experience, then you’ve got to make your way over to this place.
If you’re looking for a traditional spot in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city centre, then look no further. The Lamb & Flag is an old fave of literary icon Charles Dickens and boasts its own historic charm. Stop in for a quick pint or an authentic meal (you’re winning either way) and relax by the cosy fireplace in the colder London months. So, grab a drink and cosy up in this perfect little corner.
Perfect if you’re looking for a traditional hideaway in the middle of Soho with good food, great beers and classic British pub vibes. Located in the city centre, The Dog & Duck is another perfect getaway amidst London’s chaos. Another traditional haunt of historical figures, this pub has seen the likes of George Orwell and John Constable. The interiors are stepped up a notch, giving the place a bit of an upscale feel, and the real ales and British pub fare are just as good, so it’s no wonder why this place is a definite can’t-miss.
A truly independent pub owned by Eimear Walsh and located in the heart of Winchmore Hill, The Winchmore has a distinctively relaxed and friendly atmosphere that’s perfect for the entire family – including the dog! The pub’s renowned for its Sunday roasts, but with an entire a la carte menu brimming with seasonal options, it’s by no means a one trick pony. Locals and visitors alike can’t speak highly enough of The Winchmore, and it’s easy to see why.
The menu is made entirely from scratch in the kitchen, adding another layer of uniqueness to the eatery. If you value a locally sourced produce-heavy menu, The Winchmore has you covered with the likes of freshly made daily pot pies, Southern fried chicken burgers, spinach and chickpea curry, crispy beer-battered cod, and the handmade sage and pork sausage rolls. For a real comforting, homemade meal with a pint or glass of red on a cosy evening, this Enfield local will take care of those cravings.
Vegan diners, this one’s for you! Hackney’s Spread Eagle pub is the city’s very first of its kind – 100% vegan! It’s no secret that us Brits love a pub, and The Spread Eagle is determined to capture everything loved about pub culture, and simply veganify it. From the menu to the fixtures in the venue, everything has been chosen with a zero-animal product ethos in mind.
The hearty Sunday roast is a big part of the British dining tradition, and The Spread Eagle does it with elan, proving that meat-free is the way to go for your weekend family feast. You’ll also find hearty pies, stew and dumplings, burgers and all the best trimmings and sides that you could want. The cosy pub mimics the many you’ll find across London, with a welcoming ambience for diners of all kinds – from fully-fledged plant-based beings to those who may be curious for their first vegan experience.
A traditional British pub in the heart of Islington close to the Emirates Stadium, The Highbury Barn Tavern has been serving punters from near and far for centuries. The pub proudly boasts great homemade food, warm, genuine hospitality, cask ales, fine wines and award-winning produce showcasing local suppliers and seasonal ingredients.
The menu focuses on both innovation and traditional dishes, with a mix of contemporary and classic choices. Choose between babaganoush with tortillas for dipping or some spicy pulled pork bao buns to start, before jumping into Churracso pork shoulder or a homemade steak and ale pie. Of course, no pub visit is complete without dessert. And these guys do some of the best! We’re talking a bowl of warm Nutella gnocchi slathered in custard or a sticky toffee pudding to end your visit.
