Where to go for Belgian food in London

From mouthwatering waffles to flavourful beers, crispy frites to succulent moules, Belgian restaurants in London serve up an authentic taste of the country’s culinary treasures. Get ready to indulge in a symphony of gastronomy that will transport you straight to the heart of Brussels and Bruges.

Belgian Brasserie is an independent establishment located in a picturesque, riverside spot in South Wimbledon that combines the charm of a crêperie, waffle house and jazz lounge. The menu offers a number of delightful variations, from breakfast waffles piled high with scrambled eggs, bacon and beans, to indulgent alcoholic desserts such as limoncello and mascarpone crêpes, while its drinks options include rich Belgian hot chocolates and ice-cold beers. This cosy space — complete with eccentric teacup chandeliers — hosts a number of events in addition to its live music, including arts and crafts workshops, as well as a monthly jazz dinner.

As the sister establishment of Belgian Brasserie in South Wimbledon, Brasserie Vonne shares a common vision and passion for the arts. Owner Yvonne, who has a background in international events, has fulfilled her dream of creating a business that combines her love for live music, arts and crafts, and European cafe culture. The art deco themed space serves comforting Belgian small plates such as croquettes, slow cooked onion soup, meatballs and carbonnade al la flamande, which is a beef and beer stew. There are also four different styles of moules frites to choose from, including Belgian style — with beer, celery, shallots, cream, fresh parsley — and another that boasts a blue cheese and white wine sauce…

Lowlander
cuisinesCafe, Belgian

Nestled on the legendary Drury Lane, just on the outskirts of Covent Garden, you’ll find this brilliant Belgian bar and brasserie. From the moment you step inside, Lowlander Grand Café welcomes you, exuding the friendliness of the Low Countries that inspired its name. Open from breakfast until dinner, you’ll be presented with a whopping 250 different types of Belgian beer to choose from, plus there’s an onsite bottle shop, so you can even take a few of your favourites home! The tempting menu features culinary classics from this part of the world — think bratwurst, pâté, schnitzel and croque monsieur. There’s also an ever-changing moules of the day dish to look forward to!

Utter Waffle
cuisinesBrunch, Waffles

Despite its silly name, Utter Waffle in Herne Hill is serious about these iconic doughy delights. The concept began life as a street food truck, before finding a permanent home in this lovely, leafy part of south London. The seasonal menu is made up of self-confessed ‘posh waffles’ that are unsurprisingly titled rather unconventionally. James, Jules & the Giant Peach is topped with smoked bacon, caramelised peach, rosemary honey, cream cheese frosting and a pistachio crumb, while Truffle in Paradise is a savoury affair that consists of a mozzarella and thyme stuffed waffle topped with parmesan-pangrattato-chicken, pickled tomato pesto and truffle mayo. All of the dishes are gluten free, and there’s a dedicated vegan menu, too. You can book a bottomless brunch here any day, any time, and enjoy 90 minutes of unlimited bubbles with your waffle of choice.

Smokehouse
cuisinesBBQ / Grill, Smokehouse, Gastropub

This contemporary yet cosy Islington gastropub specialises in locally sourced meat and fish that is grilled over charcoal or roasted and smoked using sustainably sourced English oak. You’ll find overflowing pots of juicy mussels and crispy smoked lamb croquettes on the menu that are sure to satiate your cravings for classic Belgian cuisine. The drinks selection here is particularly impressive too, featuring a notable array of craft beers, including 20 on tap and 60 different bottles!
