While an Irish pub may look a little mysterious from the outside at times, the energy, music, craic, and people are responsible for bringing the spot alive. It’s hard to find someone not having a great time in a friendly Irish pub. One of the Viaduct’s most recognisable spots – O’Hagan’s is sitting pretty waterfront with a million dollar view. The Irish culture rings loud and proud with the Irish flag flying in the wind and pints of Guinness lined up along the outdoor tables at any time of the day. O’Hagan’s is as authentic as you’ll find in the inner-city, pop in and feel welcome in the warm, lively energy of the Irish. Opt for their “Pie and Pint” speciality and you’re away singing.

Mount Eden’s answer to O’Hagans, The Clare Inn is a celebration of everything great Ireland encompasses. The award-winning bar offers a warm welcome to any regular or lost straggler as they enter the traditionally dressed bar. Take a seat in one of the beloved tables near the fire and dine on pub favourites such as bangers and mash, lamb shoulder rack, and beef and stout wellington. Leave room for one of The Clare Inn’s classic apple pies for dessert.

Dicey Reilly’s is all about having a good time! With their mission statement insisting your glass never be empty, this isn’t a go-for-one-drink kind of pub. Keep the good craic going and order another as you take in the efforts of dressing the bar head to toe in Irish knick-knacks. Line the stomach with pizza, burgers, and bar snacks – or make a night of it and enjoy a confit pork ribs main, scotch fillet, or beef Guinness pie.

Last, but may we not say least, one of Auckland’s most legendary pubs sitting front and centre on the corner of Quay Street. Everyone has found themselves in Doolan’s at some point in their life, and it’s definitely not the worst spot to end up. With live music every night of the week, the atmosphere is unbeatable and the extensive steak and pie sections of the menu are a much enjoyed added bonus.
