Manchester is home to many cultures and cuisines, sometimes even with a Mancunian twist, the result being very unique restaurants and bars. One of our favourites cuisines is Greek. From amazing salads with feta, tomatoes and olives to souvlaki (popularly known as gyros) and the ultimate food of moussaka. In honour of Greek food, here is our guide on where to find some of the greatest Greek dishes in Manchester.
Dimitri’s is a Greek tapas and meze bar, offering a Mancunian twist. Located in the colourful Deansgate area, this family-owned restaurant has been about for over 30 years, providing great good, service and entertainment. On Fridays and Saturdays, you’ll find enjoyable music events on, ran by groups like Afro-beat Global Disco and Balearic Jams and Inner City Blues. The moussaka, seabass, patatas bravas and the keftedes (meatballs in tomato sauce) are fantastic options. There are a wide range of small tapas plates too, such as fried halloumi, olives and the gorgeous tiropita. Tiropita consist of feta cheese pastry triangles and tzatziki sauce. Our standout dish though Gamberoni, with king prawns, peppers, onions and either rice, pasta or chips in a creamy white wine sauce.
Tzatziki’s is part of the beating heart of Fallowfield. Predominantly a student area, the restaurant is loved by both students and locals alike. Offering gorgeously fresh Greek deli food to either sit in with or to take with you, it’s a small restaurant with a lovely home-feel. From brunch dishes, such as the strapatsada (a Greek version of scrambled eggs) to wonderful pita gyros, including pork, chicken and halloumi. There are small meze plates to share with others and also lighter options. The skepasti is amazing. These are two pita bread sandwiches and you can either get the mustard sauce or the red pepper sauce versions.
Situated in Deansgate is this lovely Greek and Cypriot taverna. It’s served wonderful traditional Greek and Cypriot food for over a decade now. It looks and feels like a traditional Greek restaurant, providing a fun atmosphere (sometimes with live Greek music) with excellent customer service. The hard work is represented by many happy customers and awards, most recently the best Family Friendly Restaurant at The Manchester Awards 2019. Firstly, you can select one of the set menus, from either the mini-meze, which act as a set of starters or the mega meze, a true Greek feast for two people. The rest of the menu is vast and full of quality. Our picks would be the octopus and the kefalotiri, an amazing Greek cheese in fried butter.
This Greek meze and tapas bar, a Traveller’s Choice winner in 2020, offers the full Greek experience – great food and special Greek dancing nights. Serving traditional Greek wraps and large, high-quality meze platters and tapas, we’d recommend the koftas, gigantes and chicken gyros. Dessert is something not to be missed here either, as the restaurant offer gorgeous traditional baklava with ice cream and Greek yogurt cheesecake with honey and pistachios. On the special Greek entertainment nights on Fridays and Saturdays, there are amazing meze banquets for only £25 per person. Be sure to check out the Little Greek Shop here, too.
