A guide to Mexican restaurants in Dublin

Mexican restaurants are beloved across the world and you can find some sort of Mexican cuisine in so many cities. Dublin is no exception either. The sweet, smoky flavours and aromas of this central American food are in high demand across Ireland’s capital. What’s more, Mexican drinks are as mean as they get, making both their food and beverages a delight across Irish shores. In this guide, Dish Cult brings you Dublin’s best Mexican restaurants.

We kick this guide off on the fringes of Dublin city, in a Mexican themed bar called Xico. This Baggot Street bar is remarkable in that it’s styled as a ‘Mexican party cavern’. Patrons can expect some coarse and exposed brick walls, hidden corners and nooks for seating, and a golden hue of seats and stools. This creates an intimate atmosphere, which almost has a cult-like following among young Dubliners.
While Xico doesn’t feature a dining menu anymore, there are plenty of reasons to pay a visit, namely the Mexican themed drinks available. Xico arguably hosts Dublin’s most extensive cocktail menu, too. The house special Frozen Margarita features a blend of Olmeca tequila, triple sec, lime and sugar. You can also add various fruits such as dragon fruit, coconut, or mango to your drink, to give a personal feel to Xico’s house special for €10. Our recommendation would be the Tlaloc – God of Lightning cocktail – featuring Havana Especial rum, lime, rhubarb bitters, angostura bitters, ancho chilli and honey grilled pineapple topped with ginger beer!
Xico host some fantastic party nights and club nights too, with bottomless margaritas on hand for €20. Xico guarantees a start to a magnificent night of Mexican dining or a roaring end to your evening with a fabulous party.

In 2018, Masa opened its doors to create an authentic Mexican dining experience in Dublin. Situated on Drury Street, its central location makes Masa the perfect little spot for a light lunch or an early dinner. Upon entry, you’re greeted with tiled white, blue, and teal walls, giving off a true Mexican interior that will have you right in the mood for some Mexican goodness.
Masa hosts a small yet diverse menu of Mexican small plates and dishes. The small plates cost less than €6.50, which is a fantastic price if you find yourself peckish after a shopping trip. We’d recommend the Mexican Bravas, which are beautiful spicy potato cubes dashed in bravas sauce. If you’re in for a full meal, the Bravas would make an excellent start. Follow up with Masa’s ‘Carne Asada’ taco, featuring steak, cheese, jalapenos, and pickled onion, and you’re onto a winner.
Masa’s strong on the drinks front too, with gorgeous variants of Margaritas available for under €12! It also offers a good range of Californian and Mexican cervezas too, making Masa a well-rounded Mexican restaurant.

While Masa brings a relaxing Mexican dining experience, 777 brings an energetic and lively Mexican dining experience to Dublin. The culinary duo of Adam Dunn and James Wiley bring the spicy and fiery flavours of Mexico City’s street markets, and have created Dublin’s only contemporary Mexican restaurant, featuring some fantastic menus and deals.
What sets 777 apart from other Mexican joints in Dublin is the range of nightly deals on offer. The week kicks off with ‘Margarita Mondays’, where you can avail of two margs for €14. ‘Taco Tuesdays’ follow, with two tacos for the excellent price of €6 – ideal for a light treat after work. Finally, ‘777 Sundays’ feature a menu where everything costs €7.77! Genius.
777 features an extensive and authentic menu too, with starters, mains and, dessert all on hand. There are also sharing platters available, making 777 the perfect venue for a date night. We’d recommend the baby back rib Botana, served with guava glaze and coleslaw, followed by the wood-fire grilled chicken thighs, featuring Guajillo Glaze, Lemon Salt Pablano Rajas for €19. 777 also features an extensive cocktail and wine list, however, for those who want the full Mexican dining experience. We’d recommend asking for the list of tequilas, where the famous Don Julio tequila can be found.

We close off this list with a heavy hitter in Acapulco, another Mexican joint on South Great Georges Street. Acapulco makes this guide because it has stood the test of time in Ireland’s capital and is the longest standing Mexican restaurant in Dublin. For over 20 years, Acapulco has crafted an authentic and experimental approach to Mexican food, with an ever-changing menu, but a consistently fun atmosphere.
Acapulco’s menu makes it an ideal spot for a meal with family or friends as it revolves around sharing platters and big plates, which is a traditionally Mexican approach to dining. We’d kick off with the Nachos Supreme, served with all the classic salsas and sauces. If you’re feeling daring, try the fried chillies filled with cream cheese! On offer are tacos, fajitas, and burritos across the mains, with both single plates and family sharing options. However, the best main comes in the form of the ‘Chilli Del Diablo’, which features spicy minced beef, peppers, cheese, and Mexican rice, topped with sour cream. It costs around €16 but is probably some of the hottest comfort food you’ll lay eyes upon in Dublin.
Acapulco also provides a kids menu, once again focusing on the family and togetherness aspect of Mexican cuisine. The drinks team serves some fantastic margaritas as well, but what’s most impressive is the availability of mezcal and sotol. These are two drinks similar to tequila, both agave based drinks, but hard to find in Europe and a delight with some chilli.

Agave is one of Dublin’s newest Mexican restaurants, located in the heart of Dublin. Here you’ll find traditional cuisine fused with fresh flavours. We love the enchiladas; three soft corn tortillas filled with chicken, covered with homemade salsa, topped with sour cream, onion and coriander – delicious!
