From hearty dumplings to ward off the cold to a banh mi in the suburbs worth the Myki fare, we’ve rounded up some of Melbourne’s best value Asian restaurants.
DoDee is well loved for quick and tasty Thai food set in a sprawling basement location perfect for big groups and loud, hearty occasions.
While sharing is the go, there are also excellent individual serves with some of the best dishes only serving one. The Tom yum soup noodles are an example of this, they come loaded with combination meats and varying spice levels to test your tolerance. The DoDee lava level 3 is a killer!
Come here for some of the best Thai noodles in Melbourne as well as classic grilled meats and stir-fried Chilli basil chicken on rice.

Craving affordable Malaysian-style hawker food with its infinite varieties and flavours? Head to The Grand Tofu in Glen Waverley for traditional yong tau foo and other authentic Malaysian street food.
You’ll be mesmerised by the extensive menu including Mee goreng, Char koay teow, Bak kut teh, Ipoh hor fun, Hokkien mee, Satay and Nasi lemak.
Dining here can be a boisterous affair but service is fast and efficient. Many customers come just for the signature yong tau foo, called Yong tofu here, a soupy dish with your choice of soup base (curry, braised and tom yum), noodle (Hokkien, egg, rice), and a selection of yong tau foo – fish paste stuffed into various vegetables like bitter gourd, eggplant, and bean curd roll and skin.
Dish Cult’s top pick: Yong tofu ($17.60)
At CJ Lunch Bar, which looks like it belongs on a K-drama set, you’ll find Korean food brimming with flavour.
Come on a weekday during lunch hour and go for a daily lunch special. The Korean bento boxes of bulgogi and donkatsu feature generous portions and a price point that many herald as the best value-for-money in town. Be warned though, it does get crowded pretty quick here.
Dish Cult’s top pick: Donkatsu bento ($12.90)
Bun Bun Bakery is the place to get your hands on some of the city’s most famous banh mi. The rolls come heaping with Vietnamese salads and meats of your choice, ranging from barbecued pork to meatballs in tomato sauce, stuffed into crunchy rolls fresh from the oven.
Almost guaranteed to have a queue out the door at any time of the day, this Springvale institution is one of Melbourne’s absolute must-trys, and at one of the cheapest price points around, lunch here is a massive steal.
Get a banh mi now and pack one to take home – they are so worth it and irresistibly affordable.

We know this is a big call, but we think Shanghai Street makes the best dumplings in town.
The menu is full of tasty, hearty dumplings, from Xiao long bao to Boiled dumplings in chilli soup, but for our money it’s the signature Pork mini buns that can’t be beaten. With a hearty porky filling and crusty bottom, we love these dumplings so much we made them one of our Must-try dishes.
There’s much more on the menu than dumplings here though. Expect Kung pao chicken with noodles, Pork and prawn wonton soup and Marinated duck in sweet thick soy sauce, all at very affordable prices.
Dish Cult’s top pick: Pan fried mini pork buns ($14.80)
