Strongly influenced by religion, climate and culture, Indian cuisine is more diverse than you could probably imagine.

Luckily in Brisbane, there are a wide range of restaurants that fit the bill and, being Indian, plenty of options for vegans and vegetarians. So when that craving for an aromatic curry or sticky sweet gulab jamun hits, follow our guide to the best Indian restaurants Brisvegas has to offer.

Taj Bengal Indian Restaurant
cuisinesIndian

It might look like an average suburban Indian from the outside, but walk in the door at Taj Bengal, and you’ll be greeted by lots of happy families all tucking into what has become a firm Ashgrove favourite.

The food covers the gamut of Indian classics from Beef vindaloo, which lives up to the “hot” label on the menu, to Prawn Biryani but they are all well executed and the serves are as you’d expect – generous. Vegetarians and vegans will also find plenty to excite them.

If you’re keen for a night in, Taj Bengal’s takeaway menu means you can enjoy that Lamb Korma on the couch.

Punjabi Rasoi
cuisinesNorthern Indian, Indo-Chinese

Fancy Northern Indian cuisine with a side of traditional Indian music? Head to Spring Hill for Punjabi Rasoi and enjoy the kind of northern Indian food that your Punjabi grandmother would make.

You can dine-in or takeaway, and there’s a wide range of dishes and deals, with the Thalis particularly good value. There are also some spicy Indo-Chinese options including Schezwan Paneer, Indian cottage cheese with all the pungent flavour of China’s Schezwan region.

Don’t miss out on dessert either, and go for the rasmalai (milk dumplings) with a cup of Indian jaggery tea.

Dish Cult recommends: Channa masala ($14.99)

Bollywood Bar
cuisinesIndian

Inspired by the colour, verve and fun of the world’s biggest film industry, the
Bollywood Bar presents Indian food with a huge helping of Indian kitsch.

As soon as you enter, the traditional rickshaw and the bright yellow motorbike will have you practicing your Jai Ho moves in no time.

Enjoy dishes, many from the streets of Mumbai, including Pani puri, crispy dough balls stuffed with potatoes and black chickpeas.

The restaurant features classic Indian desserts like kulfi as well as western-inspired twists like the Gulab jamun cheesecake.

Dish Cult recommends: Desi goat curry ($18.99)

Aamaya
cuisinesIndian

Take in the waterfront and dine on upscale Indian cuisine at Aamaya. The restaurant describes itself as serving food reminiscent of the era of the Maharajas, and there is certainly enough food fit for a king on offer.

The menu includes classic, seafood and chicken curries as well as a long list of breads from the tandoor, including the deliciously spicy Chilli cheese naan.

The fully licensed restaurant also makes a concerted effort to cater to those with dietary requirements, with plenty of dairy, nut and meat-free dishes, so everyone can enjoy this sophisticated eatery by the Brisbane River.

Dish Cult recommends: Vegetable jalfrezi ($20.90)

Garlic Clove
cuisinesIndian

Husband and wife team Sabir and Dolly have created Garlic Clove, an eatery where favourite family recipes meet a relaxing, friendly atmosphere. Sure, it’s more Gold Coast than Brisbane, but the food is certainly worth the drive.

Try the restaurant’s unique take on Chicken tikka, which uses a marinade of sweet vinegar instead of the usual yoghurt or the old school Tandoori sizzler plate, to get a taste of all the tandoor oven has to offer.

Fully licensed, but still with the option to BYO wine, this Indian eatery is the kind you wish was your local.

Dish Cult recommends: Masala prawns ($19.90)
