The Auckland brunch scene is bursting at the seams, and the selection of Eggs Benedict is equally thriving.
For those weekends where you’re getting the family together, or you’re just plain starving: Here’s a list of our favourite eggs bene spots around Auckland.
The hype is justified, Crave in Morningside has got the goods for your weekend splurge, no matter the occasion. Come Sunday morning this place is bursting with bubbly locals and large groups. The stylish interior and friendly staff make this spacious cafe a safe bet, for as many friends you can possibly string together. The benes are gluten-free with your choice of bacon or salmon served on a crispy potato hash brown. Their special chimichurri or beetroot hollandaise adds that extra kick you didn’t know your morning needed.
For an elegantly modern setting and a breakfast to fill your cup, head over to the North Shore’s Junction Eatery. The spacious interior gives you stunning views of the city from afar, as you dig into an overwhelming menu. The Eggs Benedict here has a bit of a twist with your traditional bread layer swapped for a tasty vegetable gratin–Curious? We were too. To tempt your tastebuds even more, top your bene with a choice of free-range bacon, portobello mushrooms, or our favourite: The beetroot infused salmon gravlax.
Looking for some comfort food and a homely atmosphere? Shamrock Cottage in Howick is the comfy cafe you didn’t know you were missing. Cosy up with an old friend and kill some hours as you settle in by the fire on a cold day, or out in the courtyard if it’s tanning weather. Choose your eggs on crispy ciabatta or loaded on potato and herb cakes (highly recommended) with bacon or salmon. Whether you’re from the area or not, the unique and homely ambience is worth a trip as a bit of a change from the typical Auckland dining scene.
If you need a side of relaxation with your breakfast, St Heliers Bay Bistro should be your first stop. Park up opposite the beach and unwind with brunch as you people-watch and maybe even consider a quick swim on a good day. The Eggs Blini is equally as enjoyable as the views, adding a slightly different dimension to the Eggs Benedict you’re used to. Bring a book and have a slow morning here as you’ll want to stay a while.
Talk about brunch! Ignored your Mum’s texts for a month too long? Take a walk around Parnell and treat her to a seriously good bene at Winona Forever. Flowers aren’t in short supply as they top both the food and the tables for a stunning interior. If you can ignore the decadent slices and treats in the cabinet long enough to order from the menu, the hot smoked honey-infused salmon Eggs Benedict is a real winner. Brought out to you, avocado mousse, flowers, and all, you’ll find it hard to not whip out your camera for a snap of the colourful dish. Not a salmon fan? Winona is known for twisting standard dishes on their head – opt for the marinated pork belly with your eggs and you won’t be disappointed.
Sunday blues have you stuck in bed? Organise that overdue family catch up and grab brunch at Cornwall Park. The Eggs Benedict here is a hefty portion set on toasted brioche and potato & leek rosti. Choose a seat on the deck to soak up some sun and you’ll snatch a great view of the greenery, and sheep roaming around the park. If you have room in your stomach post-bene, grab a scoop (or two) of ice cream outside at the Cornwall Park Creamery and take a stroll around the area or a 15-minute walk up to One Tree Hill for some fresh air.
