A traditional British pub in the heart of Islington close to the Emirates Stadium, The Highbury Barn Tavern has been serving punters from near and far for centuries. Set in a characterful period property, it’s played a significant part in the area’s story and has an illustrious history. The menu offers a range of classic comfort dishes crafted from fine, fresh ingredients with Sunday roasts a real highlight. Keep reading to find out more about this heritage venue.
It may seem surprising now, but cows were actually once kept here. Back in the day the venue served ale and cake, with milk still warm from the resident heffers. Soon a hop plantation, brewery and bowling green were added, with fancy afternoon teas served. The district of Highbury itself takes its name from the 13th century manor house that stood when the neighbourhood was made up of green land; during the Peasants’ Revolt the house was burned to the ground, and later the land became populated by those fleeing from the Great Fire of London.
Now Highbury is a leafy residential area on the Victoria line, with lovely parks and an old village centre with a Victorian clock tower. And its “barn” is a shopping plaza — making the Tavern an ideal stop off during an afternoon’s retail therapy. There may not be cows on the premises any longer, but you can still enjoy some fresh milk!

Like the drinks menu, the food focuses on showcasing seasonal ingredients and locally reared meat from nearby suppliers. But while there’s a strong emphasis on reducing food miles, the recipes explore flavour combinations that originate from far afield. Order some appetisers like babaganoush with tortillas for dipping, or some spicy pulled pork bao buns. Then move onto some pumpkin ravioli or Churracso pork shoulder.
Those seeking more traditional fare can feast on a homemade steak and ale pie, or Godfrey’s award-winning sausages with mash, carrots and gravy. Then sate your sweet tooth with a bowl of warm Nutella gnocchi slathered in custard or a sticky toffee pud.
Sunday lunch sees the likes of Norfolk free-range organic chicken, 31-day aged sirloin of beef and a vegan Wellington, served with all the trimmings.

Breakfast may not be the meal that jumps to mind when you think of a traditional pub, but The Highbury Barn Tavern does it in style. Order a full Barn English fry-up, meaty or veggie, paired with a Bloody Mary. It’s the perfect way to kickstart your weekend or boost recovery after a big night out. And the daytime atmosphere is conducive to families dining together — being close to Highbury Fields, you can spend some time in the great outdoors after a tasty feed.

The Highbury Barn Tavern’s interior has an industrial chic edge, with steel Tolix-style seating and wooden tables. During the colder months, the warming glow of the fire provides some welcome hygge. And come the warmer weather you can take a seat outside, under a large green parasol, or in direct sunlight to soak up the capital’s rays. The sleek dark green frontage is classy and classic, finished with topiary or colourful florals and foliage (depending on the time of year). It’s a sociable and buzzy spot, whether for a full feed or just a pint on the way home from work. Plus you can bring your pet pooch along.

In an area with close links to Arsenal Football Club, it’s fitting that The Highbury Barn Tavern should have a strong connection with the beautiful game. You’ll find all the big fixtures shown on the pub’s screens, making watching the matches a sociable and community event. Plus the venue frequently hosts quizzes and special nights to celebrate high days and holidays.
The Highbury Barn Tavern is a great gathering place. Come here with your pals and you’ll be following in the footsteps of countless generations of hungry and thirsty Londoners.
