Think this winter’s dragging on a bit? We reckon there’s nothing that will provide warm solace like a classic Sunday roast, just like mum’s.

We’ve rounded up a list of our favourites in Melbourne, both classic oldies slinging the beef and gravy with Yorkshire puddings, to newer establishments doing something a bit different. What are you waiting for? Make a booking while roast season’s still in full swing…

Farmers Arms Hotel Daylesford
cuisinesPub, Gastropub

Feel like a drive? The famous crispy roast pork belly at Daylesford’s Farmers Arms Hotel is well worth your mileage.

This charming and delightful gastropub has been showcasing local produce in the area for over 165 years and its popularity shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

But back to the main star: the pork. It arrives at your table atop a cloud of creamy mash, with house-made apple and cranberry relish and a tangy moat of red wine jus. The whole ensemble is pure umami bliss.

Lucky for those too busy on weekends, it’s not just served on a Sunday so visit midweek if you can’t wait!

Northern Git
cuisinesBritish

While “git” is British slang for “idiot” or “fool”, this country-style restaurant is worth taking seriously when it comes to good food.

“The Git”, as it’s affectionately known by locals, recreates the hearty Yorkshire fare of its head chef’s youth – served with a side of that famous Northern English hospitality you’ll know all about if you’ve ever visited.

You can taste that loving attention to detail in every dish, but it’s the Sunday roast that really ups the nostalgia meter around here.

With Yorkshire puddings as big as saucer plates and an exciting weekly rotation of new meats and sides, the philosophy here is simple: family favourites cooked to perfection.

Expect beef, pork, lamb, potatoes, brussel sprouts, and buttery rich gratins – all swimming, of course, in a gravy so moreish you’ll be asking for the recipe.

Dish Cult’s top pick: Sunday roast ($29.50)

Builders Arms Hotel
cuisinesPub, Gastropub

Each Sunday during the winter months, the Builders Arms is firing up its rotisserie and putting on a spread.

Anticipate some of Victoria’s most stellar produce in a menu that lets it shine, plus a rotating roster of wines to complement the caramelized roast flavours.

In fact, the entire wine list at Builders is impressive, so if you’ve got the time (and you always should on a Sunday), why not turn a long lunch into an even longer one and grab a bottle to share?

The house-baked yorkie puddings are a mainstay, but the sides tend to change each week on the kitchen’s creative whims.

Enjoy a range of seasonal veg and hearty proper salads to add on to your roast for the ultimate Sunday feast. Cheers!

Dish Cult’s top pick: Porchetta with roast fennel, potatoes & winter greens with apple sauce ($36)

Station Hotel
cuisinesPub, Gastropub, Steakhouse

Nobody who loves steak is unfamiliar with Footscray’s Station Hotel. It’s been lauded as “Melbourne’s best steak house” almost as long as it’s been open, a title only the fiercest steakhouse loyalists would spend time disputing.

But what many can agree on is that Station puts on a bloody awesome array of meats – “bloody” being the apt word around here if you like your cuts rare.

There are 10 plus types of beef in this modern take on a roast, with crispy golden potato chips, truffled mash, charred veg and elegant French-style mother sauces for pouring.

The desserts are a highlight at Station, so be sure to leave room for some sticky toffee pudding or strawberry milles-feuilles.

Dish Cult’s top pick: 250g MBS6+ Rostbiff with chips, alad, peppercorn and bearnaise sauces ($55.50)
