Who let The Fox out?

The Viaduct welcomes a new face to the block; The Fox, this London-style pub, is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Alongside the rest of hospitality, The Fox will open its doors this Friday (3rd December) to show fellow Aucklanders how a British pub operates.

Take a step through the door and be transported straight into the heart of the United Kingdom, with Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth greeting guests as they enter; the décor continues the royal theme and sets the stage for an epic night out.

The Fox is a new and improved version of the previous resident, Foxes, the latter a well-known sports bar. Although much has changed, one thing stays the same, a shared love of sports. Fans can come in and watch their favourite sports playing across 9 state-of-the-art screens.

If there’s one thing the Brits are known for, it’s how much they love the pub and a cold beer after a long day. The Fox has 14 classic UK beers on tap; the Anglocentric ales are not to be missed! For vino lovers, there’s an array of local and world-class wines to be tried.

One of the things we missed the most during lockdown was access to professionally crafted cocktails, and there’s more than one surprise in store when it comes to The Fox’s cocktail menu. Resident mixologist, Joey Hickman, has created a swoon-worthy best-of-British cocktail menu that will take your palette on a journey like never before. We’re talking Jaffa Cakes and bacon fat washed bourbon. The Jaffa Martini combines a shot of espresso and Jaffa Cake gin – for those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of eating a Jaffa Cake, the flavours include apricot, a hint of tangerine oil and a layer of chocolate on top.

If you prefer your cocktails on the savoury side, fear not; the Hair of the Fox will sort you out. The reimagined Bloody Mary combines bacon fat washed bourbon, Marmite, Heinz Brown Sauce and tomato juice, with a full English breakfast on top. We like to think of ourselves as Bloody Mary enthusiasts, and this sounds divine. Other cocktail options include the Sherbet Lemon Drop and Jammie Dodger.

The gastropub has incorporated iconic British flavours into the menu, offering patrons a proper taste of London. In our opinion, there’s nothing like hearty pub grub; the feel-good food cures every hangover and satisfies every craving. The Fox’s menu doesn’t disappoint; you’ll find iconic dishes like toad in the hole, pigs in blankets, fisherman’s basket and, of course, a weekend roast.

Indulge in a London staple; the pie. Savoury, flake-y and utterly perfect. Every Kiwi can appreciate a good pie, and with flavours like Angus beef and cheese, steak and kidney, or chicken with truffle – you’re bound to find something that tickles your fancy. Each pie comes with a serving of creamy mashed potatoes, we can’t resist carbs on carbs.

The Fox is the perfect spot to watch the rugby, grab a few beers after work or spend the night drinking your way through the creative cocktail menu. The Fox also has a separate area, Churchill Room, which can be hired out for private functions of up to 60 people (depending on government restrictions). Book ahead of your visit to guarantee a table.

We’re counting down the seconds until we can head down to the Viaduct and visit The Fox.
