The best festive drinks London has to offer
It’s not just the food menus that are filled with festive additions this year, drinks menus around London are also being given a welcome twist for Christmas. From moreish mulled wine to cinnamon-covered cocktails, here’s our guide to the best drinks to sample across the capital this Christmas, and exactly where to find them.
Head to the American Bar at The Stafford for a warming mulled wine, created using Bar Manager Benoit Provost’s special recipe. The Christmas classic features a light red wine and brandy base, flavoured with warming cinnamon, clove, bay and orange, and sweetened with sugar to finish. Its deep red colour, spicy fragrance and familiar taste make this drink feel like Christmas in a glass.
This modern French brasserie is one of Covent Garden’s best kept secrets. And for the festive season, Anais Bertain – the restaurant’s head bartender and mixologist – is whipping up an elegant selection of Christmas cocktails. This year, she suggests sampling the Tipsy Madeleine for £14. Made using freshly baked madeleines, infused with Buffalo Trace Bourbon, which are strained, shaken with Frangelico and strained again, and topped with a madeleine crumble rim, this unique drink tastes as good as it looks.
Mayfair-based wine bar Coravin is serving up over 50 varieties of Champagne, all available by the glass thanks to Champagne preservation system Coravin Sparkling. A year-round classic, this effervescent beverage is perhaps the most elegant way to toast the festive season. With everything from Krug and Dom Perignon and Egly Ouriet to Veuve Frony on the menu, all priced between £8 and £850, there’s a glass to quench every visitor’s thirst.
Just in time for the festive season, Spanish restaurant group Ibérica has launched a twist on the classic espresso martini, costing £10.50 per glass. The PXpresso martini features 42 Below vodka, coffee liqueur, cranberry juice, freshly brewed coffee and Pedro Ximénez Sherry Néctar. Perfect for an after-dinner treat and equally for a party-starter, this coffee-based drink is undoubtedly a Christmas crowd-pleaser.
For Christmas, Mayfair’s Isabel launches the Gingerbread Martini. This elegant drink features Beluga Vodka’s smooth, triple-distilled Noble Vodka, slightly spiced Kingsdown Ginger Beer and a little lemon juice for some added sharpness. No bookings are taken for the bar area and walk-ins are welcomed, so simply stop by unannounced until 25th December to sample this grown-up gingerbread treat.
This ultra-social hotspot is bringing a merry new cocktail to both its City and West End locations. Priced at an impressive £10, Gingle All The Way features Tanqueray London gin, lemon juice, homemade spiced blackberry liqueur with red wine and brandy, and makes the perfect accompaniment to a round of crazy golf.
London’s burger hub Dirty Bones is serving up a bold Christmas cocktail to complement its NYC-inspired comfort food offering. This festive favourite features Montelobos Joven Mezcal, Giffard Peach de Vigne Liqueur, cinnamon syrup, celery bitters, lime, chilli salt garnish – all shaken and served over ice.
While you soak up the Cinderella-inspired atmosphere at The Langham this year, be sure to stop by the Artesian bar for a festive cocktail. Select from the likes of Off To The Ball, a dry martini-style cocktail with floral notes, and The Glass Slipper, a clear old fashioned-style cocktail with earthy notes. The belle of the ball however, is undoubtedly the Let It Snow. This creamy cocktail features Belvedere Vodka, Disaronno Velvet, Cacao Blanc and vanilla syrup, and is garnished with grated lime and a sprinkling of pink glitter. Plus, if you’re there while the clock strikes midnight, an alarm clock will sound on each table and every guest will be served a complimentary festive tipple.
Expect Sicilian-inspired festive feels at this Fitzrovia hotspot. Alongside delicious dining options, there’s a range of seasonal cocktails on offer. Our suggestion? Sirocco. Priced at £13 and served warm, this festive tipple is made from marsala dolce, amaretto, lemon juice, cloves and cinnamon.
