Half Moon Bay, Takapuna, The Viaduct – Whether you’re in the heart of the CBD or over on the North Shore, you’re never too far away from a picturesque view of the ocean.

Good company, food, and a view are the holy trio to any outing, whether it’s post-work drinks, an overdue catch-up, or a first date. Steal a table on the deck, or settle in by the window at any of the following restaurants as we have rounded up some of Auckland’s best seaside views. Make the most of summer by grabbing a coffee or an evening meal at any of these enticing locations.

Devon On The Wharf
cuisinesMediterranean

Devon On The Wharf is about both the journey and the destination. Choose a cloudless day and enjoy the scenic route as you catch the ferry across to Devonport. For just a 12-minute trip out of the city, you’re quickly transported to a seaside oasis. Devon On The Wharf provides a Turkish-inspired menu, integrated with Kiwi Classic dishes. If you’re not craving fish and chips we do recommend diving into the Mediterranean cuisine they have to offer and finishing it off with a sweet slice of baklava. Take some friends, your mum, (or even the in-laws) for a treat of an afternoon as you gaze over one of the best views in Auckland.

The Oyster Inn
cuisinesSeafood

No list of seaside views is complete without Waiheke Island. Set up shop inside with a window seat or out on the verandah soaking up the sunlight, The Oyster Inn is a stunning home away from home. Offering luxury boutique accommodation, you can make this your home for a night after you’ve rolled yourself away from the bar and Waiheke Te Matuku oysters. Serving up fresh fish and vegetables that are grown specifically for them by local gardeners – you can’t get any fresher than this! Flounder, chermoula eggplant, or the classic fish and chips – whatever you order for a main, please leave room for the chocolate torte afterwards.

Akarana Eatery
cuisinesModern New Zealand

Chef Nic Watt has done it again. An exquisite menu focusing on fresh seafood and sustainable ingredients, Akarana Eatery ticks all the boxes. Open 7 am- late, pop over for a cup of All Press coffee as you enjoy views of the Waitemata Harbour, or enjoy an evening out on the lawn. For the relaxed summer days – especially when it’s a romantic date – we recommend the Akarana Picnic Hamper. Complete with prosciutto, Puhoi cheese, smoked salmon and chocolate donuts to name a few, this idea alone makes Akarana a fabulous destination. Stay for dinner if freshly shucked oysters and wood-fired Kaipara Harbour yellow-belly flounder make your stomach grumble. You won’t want to let the summer pass before you’ve experienced Akarana Eatery.

Tokyo Bay
cuisinesJapanese

Get out of the CBD and enjoy a picturesque (and Instagrammable) view of Takapuna Beach. With a modern take on Japanese dining, Tokyo Bay is all about keeping it real – you’ll find no ‘fusion’ here. The experienced team has curated a menu full of sushi and sashimi plates you’ll want to share (or not). Beef tataki with flavours of ginger and garlic, and the miso-glazed salmon and bok choy are delicious dishes, but with bento boxes, teppan-yaki and donburi options in full supply, you’ll be working your way through the menu longer than their fast and friendly service. Sit out under the umbrellas and enjoy a direct view of the beach and you work your way through the menu (and cocktail list).

White + Wongs
cuisinesAsian Fusion

The foolproof way to please all your friends (yes, even the picky one) in a single menu. White + Wongs provides dishes inspired by street food from China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand. From dumplings to baos and soups – know that whatever you order, the flavours will have a delicious punch. The crispy soft shell crab will have your taste buds in an excited frenzy, flavoured with garlic, chilli, spring onion and Sichuan pepper. Enjoy your food by all means, just don’t forget the view! Located right on the Viaducts water’s edge, stay late into the evening to see the magic of The City of Sails.

Marina Cantina
cuisinesMexican

This eatery will make all of your Mexican drink and dish wishes come true. Grab a fruity margarita in one hand and a shredded pork taco in the other and you’ll be in heaven as you gaze out over their waterfront location. Marina Cantina is the sibling of Grangers Tap House and Kitchen which is conveniently located next door if you’re looking for a night of bar-hopping. With quesadillas, burritos, and Cantina queso cheese-loaded fries you’ll be happy you made the ferry over to enjoy a meal equally as engaging as the view.
